Get The Scoop On Our New Stores in Clearwater Beach

Friday, June 11th, 2010

Maui Nix has expanded again, this time with two new stores in Clearwater Beach, FL. Our new locations allow us the opportunity to serve up some fresh threads and hot new boards to the Clearwater community.

So why Clearwater Beach? We spoke with Maui Nix owner George Karamitos to get the scoop. Here’s what he had to say:

Maui Nix: Why open stores in Clearwater Beach?
George: I have been visiting Clearwater Beach since the late 70’s and have watched the beach evolve through the years. I felt that after all the construction the area had gone through, the area was ready. There is a need for better retail along the beach and hopefully we can help fill it. Plus, we’re stoked to be part of the area’s surf and skate culture!

Maui Nix: How are you getting hooked into the local scene?
George: We are promoting the opening of our shops using many methods. We’ve started with word of mouth to friends and family. You’ll see us on local cable throughout Pinellas, Pasco and Hillsborough counties. In addition, we plan on supporting local athletes and will work on supporting and planning events geared to skating, surfing and skim. Look for the same high level type of events and sponsorships we’ve done in Daytona, now that we’ve got our feet on the ground.

Check out photos of both stores on our Facebook page, and swing in to get the scoop on upcoming events or to see the latest from brands like O’Neil, Billabong, Roxy and more!

Daytona Surf School – Call Today, Surf Tomorrow

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

Whether you are an amateur or already know how to ride the waves, there’s always room for improvement. This summer, why not learn from the pros at Daytona Beach Surf School.

Maui Nix is a proud sponsor of the Daytona Beach Surf School, run by former Eastern Surfing Association Champion Tim Gilley (left) and world surfer Frankie Senese (right). Between the two, they’ve competed in hundreds of events and have been teaching surfing lessons for over a decade.

The surf school offers classes from June 9th through August 20th. Participants’ ages range from 7 to 17 years old. On your first day, don’t be surprised if you are catching the waves and riding in to the shore. You might even learn some tips and pointers that some surfers discovers only after years in the water.

The school provides students with soft boards, lessons on how to understand weather trends, predict tides and read the waves.

Maui Nix ran into Frankie and here’s what he has to say about the Daytona Beach Surf School.

MAUI NIX: Do Daytona’s small summer waves make it hard to teach surfing?

FRANKIE: Actually for younger kids, Daytona’s smaller waves make learning easier. Even though they may look small from the shore most waves are big enough to ride. There were two days last summer where we couldn’t surf, and we use that time to focus on paddling and other skills. Sometimes, we even have paddle races.

MAUI NIX: How many kids do you have in a class?

FRANKIE: Typically there 15 to 25 students per week and we’ll have four to six instructors to be sure everyone gets the proper attention. Many of our instructors have been with us since the school began 10 years ago. These guys really know the local surf and what they’re doing. Surf school also makes a great birthday present for your kids, nieces and nephews. For more visit http://dytnasurfschool.homestead.com or call (386) 441-1110.

Daytona WinterJam V-Dub Show Rolling Closer

Monday, February 8th, 2010

The 2010 Daytona WinterJam is just a few short weeks away, and we’re getting more than a little excited.  The Vdub events are always one of our favorites, and this year there’s so much goin’ on for those with dope ridez (or those of us who just like peeping other folks’ whips).

On Saturday, February 20th, check out the DubJam H2O inside the Ocean Center for a hall full of customized, slammed, tricked and glammed VW’s, most of them with insane electronics and sound systems. (They usually let a few Audi’s and other imports sneak in, too)

If you’re a fan of the classic Vdub busses, they’ll have a full lot of restored and customized sleds at the Bandshell for the Bustoration Transporter Treffen.  They’ll be out there all day on Saturday, and we’ll be strollin’ down from our shop at the Ocean Walk throughout the day to check ‘em out.

There’s lots more going on all weekend long…parties, BBQ’s, cruising the strip.  Check out daytonawinterjam.com for all the deets, and come on by Maui Nix at Ocean Walk and say hey while you’re down here.
