This month, the store profile belongs to our Oceanwalk location, on the beach in Daytona. This store was the 4th in the fleet to “sail” and is part of our three location network in the Daytona area.

At the heart of Daytona Beach’s most famous shoreline, Ocean Walk Shoppes is a collection of upscale eateries, boutiques and 10 screen movie theatre will captivate guests with afternoon and evening delights. A live web cam at oceanwalkshoppes.com allows guests to view the Ocean Walk Shoppes, Bandshell and the Atlantic Ocean.

All of our major brands are represented in this location, of course and the location serves both the families of summer, and the spring break crowd of spring with enthusiasm.

The management team at this location is among the most experienced and professional, Like most of our Managers, most have worked their way up from sales associates showing the commitment to the customer and product knowledge.

Shawno

Shawn was born and raised in Cocoa, FL He and his family moved around to find the right location and nowhere has felt more like home than Ormond beach. {near Daytona} He began working at the flagship location right on A1A in Daytona, working his way up to management at that store then transferring to Ocean Walk. Shawn is an avid surfer and board sport enthusiast. When he’s got some free time on his hands he loves to Surf, paint, Skateboard and make movies and has done several informative videos for the store (check him out on our facebook!).
At one point in time Shawn used to wrestle Emus and box Kangaroos on a semi pro level, having traveled to Australia in 2009. Unfortunately, Shawn was involved in a tragic event where he was almost killed by a pod of Kangaroos. He (and the Roos) still tell the tale in the Outback. Reading, poetry, short walks on the beach at 4 am are among his many outside interests.

Sabrina was born and raised in the Volusia county area. When she began working for Maui Nix, she, like most managers, started as a sales associate and made her way into management and is the in-store visual merchandiser for the Oceanwalk location
Sabrina has two Beautiful daughters and enjoys spending her free time with her family whenever possible. Sabrina is just an all around great person. We are happy to have her as one of our managers at our store!

Zach has been with the Nix for 2 years now, starting off as an sales associate. Zach was born and raised in the Daytona Beach area and is currently attending Daytona State College studying engineering. On Zachs free time he likes to skimboard, spin some radical New Zealand style Poi, and is an avid organic gardener, And Loves his Xbox. Zach is quite the character with a great heart. We are glad to have him as part of the team. He once challenged Chuck Norris to to a wrestling match. but chuck called Zach and won over the phone cause chuck put Zach on hold.

Julie is another native of the Daytona area. She is currently going to UCF for psychology. (pretty soon she will be able to know our deepest thoughts)
Julie has also moved her way up the ranks into management becoming our newest Manager on the Team. In her free time you can catch her cruising around town with her friends or at her parents lounge. with so much personality she can make anyone feel comfortable We are glad to have had her join the management team!

We move back to where it all began with our store profiles. Daytona Beach is the place and the profile this month, is our store at Volusia Mall.  [edit: the spirit, the attitude and fun of the staff come through vividly in this profile, written by Travis White.]

The Maui Nix located inside the Volusia Mall is known as Maui Nix #5 (due to being the 5th Maui Nix opened). Located on International Speedway Blvd., across the street from Daytona International Speedway and a block from the International Airport. Maui Nix #5 was opened right before the 2003 Christmas holiday season. Maui Nix had been established on the beachside for years and only felt it fitting to provide their wonderful products and service to those who don’t get across the bridge that often. Also being closer to the I-95/U.S.92 exchange, the Volusia Mall provides shopping to neighboring communities such as the Flagler/Palm Coast area and Deland as well.

Just as our flagship store is known as ‘the source’ for surf boards, our Volusia Mall location has the same reputation by the local skaters. 

Heading up the management team at Volusia Mall is Travis White, Travis has been with Maui Nix since 2000. Travis’ first 3 years wth Maui Nix were spent managing the original location in Daytona Beach before transferring to the Volusia Mall location. Along w managing the mall location, Travis is also the skate buyer for the company. No one is quite sure where Travis is from, some speculate a science experiment gone wrong. Travis has a fiancé’, and a daughter who also works at Maui Nix. When he is not riding 30′ plus tow in waves, jumping from planes sans parachute, or free-diving w great white sharks, he enjoys a nice quiet book.

Brian Hek is next on the management team at the mall. Brian has been w Maui Nix for about ten years. He also started at the original Daytona location. Brian has also managed at the Ocean Walk location location. Brian left the company for a couple years, moving to Tampa, only to realize the empty feeling in his soul left there w/out Maui Nix in his life. Packing up his belongings and making a bee-line back to Daytona joining the management team at Volusia Mall. We can’t talk about "Brian"s origins because he is in the witness relocation program after bringing down one of the largest cartels in the western hemisphere. Oops! my bad, (sorry "Brian"). Brian has a fiancé’ and a wonderful daughter. Brian spends his free-time riding BMX and tending to his many concrete induced abrasions.

Next on the management team is Amber Ashton, Amber also got her illustrious start at the original Daytona Beach location. Along w managing, Amber is involved in the Merchandising of the store. Amber has a fiancé’, and two young children, a girl and a boy.When not at work, Amber can be found on her boat soaking up the rays having fun. When not boating, Amber enjoys working on ways to reduce green house gases, carbon emissions, saving whales, rain forest rehabilitation, and all around world peace.

Rounding out the management team at Volusia Mall, is Joe Hodges. Joe is a recent addition to the management ranks, however Joe has been w Maui Nix for a few years now as a leading sales associate. Joe is also a part time student. Joe spends a lot of his free time surfing in his favorite ‘Speedos’; he claims they add to duck diving hydro-dynamics. We believe him, no one wants to dispute his claims or be caught surfing w him. Joe is also a connoisseur of the planets, astronomy is one of his strong suits. His favorite planet is Saturn, no one is sure why??

This months store profile is our Destin shop.  Opened in March of 2004, this store in our fleet has become a local landmark.  Under the same management since opening day, the Nix at the Commons serves both the local community as well as the thousands of visitors that flock to this beautiful part of Florida each year.

Maui Nix wins SIMA’s 2011 Breakout Retailer of the

Year!

Back in November, the Surf Industry Manufacturer’s Association announced the nominees for the the ‘emmys of the Surf Industry’ and we were super stoked to learn we had been honored by the surf industry to be nominated for the award, Breakout Retailer of the  Year.  By definition, this award is:

Breakthrough Retailer of the Year

Recognizing the specialty retailer with 15 U.S. brick and mortar doors or less that experienced success in 2011, between January 1 and September 1. Consider the specialty retailer that had a breakthrough year in terms of sales and increased store recognition and appeal.

Our Ft. Lauderdale store in particular received the attention of the Industry. Other nominees were outstanding and were all from California.

Voting of the entire surf industry took place early in January and last month, we attended the festivities and for the first time ever, we were announced as the winner!

We are obviously proud of getting this recognition but we are much prouder of our staff at our Ft. Lauderdale location (and all our stores!) as well as the vision of our owners, buyers and General/Regional Managers and merchandisers who work hard 7 days a week living the lifestyle and dream.

Claiming it? Yes, we are, actually but none of this would be important at all without our main claim – our loyal customers.  They have, since 1989, been the reason we exist and why we try to work hard each day to keep them!

Maui Nix Team Rider, Luke Marks is off to the Ripcurl Nationals in California!

Question: What are your thoughts about competing for a Rip Curl Grom Search national title?

Answer: I’m stoked I made it!  Looking forward to surfing Ocean Beach. I heard it can get really good there. I’m going to try as hard as I can and try and    win it. Hopefully see Kelly {Current 10 time World Champion, Kelly Slater} win #11. Go East Coast!!!

Elite, committed athletes are not a vast group on the east coast of the United States and while not rare, to be counted as among them, takes a lot of dedication, skill and sacrifice.  Standing high among these, is Florida sensational surfer, Luke Marks.  We at Nix are proud to have the title of shop sponsor with this fine young accomplished athlete. 

At 13, he has already amassed the attention of top sponsors with his skill.   And, on November 1st, he is off to San Francisco, California to take part in the  Ripcurl National Gromsearch Championship Finals.  A win there, will see him taken in the spring, to the Ripcurl Bells World Gromsearch Finals.  This is an enormous accomplishment but with Lukes track record, it is not surprising. 

Besides notching the win for his division on the east coast leg of the Gromsearch, he is

• -NSSA (National Scholastic Surfing Association) 2010 East Coast Champion {Explorer Menehune Division}
• -Currently first in 4 divisions in the current NSSA conference schedule and currently leading his division(s) in the Atlantic Surfing Federation Florida season.  (both organizations are the only ones on the east coast under the wing of the National Governing Body, Surfing America)

Anthony, born and raised in Clearwater has been the assistant manager since store 10 opened back in April of 2010. He has been working in retail for 8+ years, 4 of those as an assistant manager. He enjoys the skate culture as well and has a lot of product knowledge. Some of the things he likes to do include playing the guitar, computers, video games, and being on the beach!

Stephanie Donaldson aka Sky Flower,  is a local artist who travels around to festivals and craft fairs promoting her art. She has an Egyptian dog named Lady who is her trustee sidekick. She’s only been with Maui Nix for a few months but, the timing, the beach and the weather is perfect. "Feels great to be a part of such a awesome team!" Sky said.

Carlos has called Maui Nix – Clearwater Beach a home since it opened it’s doors in the spring of 2010. Starting out as a sales associate he worked his way up to assistant manager. Even though he is fairly new to the action sport industry, his passion for it is equivalent to that of a seasoned vet. He has tried to gather as much product knowledge on all of the brands that Maui Nix carries to help him offer the best advice to all the guests that make their way into the store. So don’t worry, just because he lives and breathes skate longboarding, he definitely can you help you find that cute top or the best pair of sunglasses for you.

Jeff

A surfer at heart, Jeff has been with Maui Nix for over six years and enjoys being surrounded by the industry’s best brands and styles. Managing a Maui Nix store since 2006 has kept him on the cutting edge of surf and skate merchandise advancements. Jeff has been skateboarding and surfing for over 20 years and Maui Nix provides him the unique opportunity to use his knowledge of both sports to educate and advise customers in finding not only what they want, but need.

“Since I was a teenager I wanted to work for a surf shop. I love to see what’s new and enjoy helping others find what they need or want. Surfing is my life and being able to excel professionally with a company that specializes in what I love reminds me how lucky I am,” Jeff tells us. Jeff values his excellent staff and loyal customer base. He says, “I like to treat my customers as guests and love talking shop with them. I think they enjoy our friendly atmosphere, great merchandise selection, and the personal attention that they get if they need it.”

Dan

Dan has been working at Maui Nix for a little over 3 years. After having attained his AA degree, he immediately began his training as an assistant manager back in September of ’07. As an active musician, Dan needed a job that would be able to work around his schedule. Not only does Maui Nix offer a flexible schedule, but the atmosphere in the work place is very family oriented. The surf and skate industry is something that Dan has been around since he was in middle school. “It’s easy for me to talk to customers about skateboarding and longboarding because it is something that I enjoy. Customers may seem overwhelmed at our selection of boards, but I help narrow down the selection to the style they are looking for,” states Dan. Since working at Maui Nix, Dan has acquired a vast amount of knowledge about several different companies ranging from Quicksilver and Sanuk to Oakley and Sector 9. He uses this knowledge to help boost sales for the company as well as giving the best product at the best price to the consumer.

Mike

Mike has been working with Maui Nix since the Pembroke Pines store opened in fall of 2007. He started as a sales associate and in a few months became an Assistant Manager. Mike is currently in college, double majoring in Political Science and Pre-Law. Working at Maui Nix has allowed him to continue advocating work for military families and education issues, two issues that he is very passionate about. Mike grew up as an army brat and has travelled all over the world, living in Germany, Washington State, and Texas. “The Pines store is my second home, we are a giant family here, ” says Mike, “I love working with the customers, learning who they are, knowing what they like to wear and getting to know them and their families. My favorite part of my job is that I am responsible for merchandising the store and working with the buyers to get the best merchandise for customers. I love the freedom and trust that the company gives me, you go into other big name stores and they are so corporate, by the book, they all look the same. We are different here. We look and feel unique.” When Mike is not working he loves hanging out with family and friends, doing anything outdoors. Although he doesn’t get to do it much he loves snowboarding and going down to the beach to longboard. Fun fact.. Mike is obsessed with twitter (@michael2188), you can find him tweeting about new and cool products that Maui Nix carries.

Store manager Skip Maxwell is a native in these parts, a rarity afforded by only a few. A past shop owner himself before joining the Maui Nix team, Skip is always there to give guidance, and technical advice when needed. A avid waterman who swims, surfs and paddles {he once competed in paddleboard relay across the Florida straits} Skip spends one of his days off lifeguarding on Clearwater’s busy beach, and  lists his favorite thing to do is ” hang with my wife and daughter”!!!! Always available, Skip is our guy for Maui Nix Clearwater Beach

Stephanie Wetzel

Assistant Manager Stephanie has been working in the action sports industry since she was 16 years old. An active participant in the lifestyle as well, she loves spending time on Florida’s beautiful beaches and rivers. The awesome location just steps from Clearwater’s South Beach shoreline and familiar merchandise encouraged Stephanie to join the Maui Nix team, and she has been with the company for 10 months now, helping to open both Clearwater Beach locations. Although she is has not mastered the sports, Stephanie likes learning about surfing and skimboarding from her peers and local customers and loves trying to improve her skills when she gets the chance. Being located amidst numerous hotels and tourist hotspots, she enjoys the diversity of the customer base and helping new faces every day!

 



 

Stephen King

Assistant Manager Stephen is a Tampa Bay area native who enjoys surfing, bmxing, and longboarding. He has been employed by surf and skate retailers for the past 5 years and is very knowledgeable in action sports across the board. With his upbeat attitude and sense of humor, Stephen is a blast to work with, keeping a positive vibe and always happy to cater to customer needs. When he’s not working, surfing, or skating, Stephen enjoys music and a nice bowl of Pho, a tasty Vietnamese dish.
