Ever wonder how an event like Winterjam comes to be? Here’s the scoop, from Joe at Volksvision Mediawerks, the promoter of the event and the group responsible for the winter custom car show since 2007:
Originally, we wanted to help raise money for the Junior Lifeguard Association, so we talked about a surf and longboard contest, raffles, etc., to raise some money for our local lifeguards to go to the national competitions.
We threw around a few ideas with JLA, then took the ball and ran with it.
In 2007, it was mainly just the car show, but we wanted to do something a little more than the typical VW show. In came live music, bikini shows and an amateur skate contest in 2008.
In 2009, Maui Nix came on board with the surf contest, and new for 2010 is having the Vdub show inside the Ocean Center (it used to be outdoors). We’ve added some BMX to the sports venues. This year it’ll be mostly demo stuff to lay the ground work for a full on BMX contest in 2011.
Maui Nix will have tents set up throughout the events and helping run the surf events, and our own Travis is running the entire skate contest. Swing by our booths, we may just have some stickers and cold drinks!
