Web Accessibility

Our commitment

We want everyone to be able to shop with Maui Nix online, including people who use a screen reader, navigate with a keyboard, magnify the screen or use other assistive technology.

We are working to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA. These guidelines are published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and are the most widely used standard for accessible websites.

This page is a record of that work: what we tested, how we tested it, what we found and what we changed. We add to it each time we test the site again, and earlier entries stay in place.

Where we are today

Our most recent automated test, on September 18, 2026, found no WCAG 2.2 Level A or Level AA violations across the 16 types of page we test. Those pages range from the home page, product listings and product pages through to the shopping cart, account and contact pages.

Automated tools can only detect some kinds of accessibility problems, so a clean automated result is not the same as a fully accessible website. We also test by hand, and the items under “What we are still working on” below are part of that ongoing work.

How we test

  • Automated testing with axe-core by Deque Systems, checking against WCAG 2.2 Levels A and AA on 16 representative page types.
  • Additional automated checks with Silktide, accessiBe accessScan and A11yInspect by BarrierBreak. Each tool looks for different problems, so we use several and compare their results.
  • Keyboard testing of the main menu and other interactive controls, such as filters and product options, without a mouse.


What we have done

Date What we did
September 18, 2026 Updated the colours of text, links and buttons for stronger contrast, then tested again. Automated testing found no WCAG 2.2 Level A or AA violations across all 16 page types.
September 18, 2026 Removed a third-party accessibility overlay from the site. Accessibility is now handled directly in our own website code, where it applies to every visitor without relying on an add-on.
September 17 and 18, 2026 Fixed the issues found in that testing. This included table headings that screen readers can follow in the cart and checkout, names for icon buttons such as the product share and close buttons, keyboard and screen reader support for the price filter, and standard country and state menus at checkout.
September 15 to 17, 2026 Tested the live website page by page with A11yInspect and Silktide, including the shopping cart and checkout.
August 27, 2026 Released the first set of improvements on the live website.
August 2026 Fixed the issues the audit found. This included keyboard access to the main menu, visible focus outlines, a “Skip to main content” link, clearer page structure and headings, names for controls and search fields, and larger targets for small buttons and links.
August 10, 2026 Began a full accessibility audit of mauinix.com against WCAG 2.2 Level AA.

What we are still working on

  • Product images. Many of our older product photos do not yet have a text description for people who cannot see them. We are adding these.
  • Spam protection. Our forms use Google reCAPTCHA, which adds a component we cannot fully control. We plan to replace it with an alternative that is easier for everyone to use.
  • Content from other companies. Some features, such as embedded content from other providers, are outside our control and may not meet the same standard.
